The micro-estimation of benzoic and hippuric acids in biological material.

چکیده
4. Incubation of homogenates in acetate buffer leads to a progressive release of enzyme from the granules to the solution. This does not occur in citrate buffer. 5. In concentrated homogenates, the presence of the insoluble enzyme fraction can lead to false results for the total activity. 6. The pH-activity curves for the hydrolysis of phenolphthalein glucuronide in acetate buffer by the soluble and insoluble fractions are identical in having peaks at pH 4-5 and 5-2. 7. Saccharate inhibits the enzyme in the granules without affecting its release to the solution on incubation in acetate buffer. 8. The significance of these findings in the assay of glucuronidase is discussed, with particular reference to tissues in varying states of proliferation.

Studies in detoxication. 82. The fate of benzoic acid in some domestic and other birds.
In most laboratory mammals benzoic acid is converted into hippuric acid and benzoyl glucuronide (see Williams, 1959), except for the cat, which seems to produce only hippuric acid (Robinson & Williams, 1958, and unpublished data). Jaffe (1877) showed that benzoic acid was converted in hens into ornithuric acid, and benzoyl glucuronide has also been found to be a metabolite of benzoic acid in he...
متن کاملThe Conjugation of Benzoic Acid in Man*
The extensive investigations on the conjugation of benzoic acid, since Wohler’s discovery in 1824 of the synthesis of hippuric acid by the animal, have failed to furnish a comprehensive and definite concept of the metabolic and chemical changes taking place when benzoic acid is introduced into the organism. No attempt has ever been made to explain why man eliminates benzoic acid almost complete...

Since 1824 when Wijhler first called attention to the fact that the formation of hippuric acid represented a synthetic reaction by the animal body, this substance has occupied an interesting place in biological chemistry. In recent years it has received special attention from the fact that the study of its production may throw light upon certain phases of nitrogen metabolism. However, owing to ...

متن کاملBenzoylated Amino Acids in the Animal Organism. Iii. a Method for the Determination of Hippuric Acid* and a Study of the Synthesis of Hippuric Acid in Rabbits.? by Wendell H. Griffith
In 1877 Salkowski (1) noted the presence of a reducing substance in the urine of rabbits following the administration of sodium benzoate. Later Magnus-Levy (2) reported that this substance was benzoyl glycuronic acid and stated that less was found in the urine of rabbits than in the urine of dogs and sheep. At the present time it is the general assumption that rabbits detoxicate ingested benzoi...
